Red Wings edge Hurricanes in shootout

Adam Erne produced the winning goal in the eighth round of the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the host Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Valtteri Filppula and Erne scored in regulation for the Red Wings. Larkin began the shootout with a tally.Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov extended the shootout on the last chance of the first three rounds.Martin Necas, Jordan Staal, Dougie Hamilton and Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes.Erne also had Detroit’s final goal in regulation, putting the Red Wings ahead briefly.Aho’s tally at the 4-minute mark was the last goal of regulation. It came shortly after the Hurricanes had a potential tying goal by Nino Niederreiter wiped out on video review because of goaltender interference with 5:13 remaining.The game never had more than a one-goal margin. The Red Wings won for just the second time in their last seven games.Thomas Greiss of the Red Wings made 30 saves. Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek stopped 24 shots.The Hurricanes, wearing Hartford Whalers retro jerseys, are 3-1-1 on a scheduled eight-game homestand. They had a three-game winning streak end.
