For the second consecutive season, the Detroit Tigers were sent home in a winner-take-all Game 5 on the road in the American League Divisional Series, and this time, it came at the hands of the Seattle Mariners following a 15-inning 3-2 loss to end the Tigers’ 2025 season.
The Tigers captured Game 1 in Seattle by a 3-2 decision to take an early 1-0 best-of-five series lead before the Mariners took Games 2 and 3 by 3-2 and 8-4 decisions, respectively, to put the Tigers on the brink of elimination heading to Game 4 in Detroit.
Detroit responded with an emphatic 9-3 win to send the series back to Seattle for a win or go home Game 5.
During Game 5, the Tigers trailed 1-0 before Kerry Carpenter gave the fan base some hope with this big time blast:

Tarik Skubal was phenomenal as usual on the mound:

However, the Mariners eventually evened the game at 2-2 off the Tigers’ bullpen that sent the game into a Saturday morning marathon in which the home team finally broke through in the bottom of the 15th inning with a walk-off, bases loaded single to win 3-2 and move on to the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays.
To put a bow on the 2025 season, here’s the season-ending press conference from Scott Harris and A.J. Hinch:
