It wasn’t great baseball this past week, but the Detroit Tigers are still holding to the top spot in all of Major League Baseball after completing a 4-3 week against both Chicago-based teams in the White Sox and Cubs.
After beginning the week with a four-game series split on the road against the White Sox, the Tigers bounced back over the weekend back at home in taking two of three from the Cubs to cap off another winning week.
At this point in the season, the Tigers (43 wins) are holding off the New York Mets (42 wins) and Cubs (40 wins) for the best record in Major League Baseball while continuing to keep their distance from the other teams chasing them in the American League Central.
Here’s how the A.L. Central standings look going into another busy week:
AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL STANDINGS
DETROIT TIGERS – 43-24
Minnesota Twins – 35-30 (7 GB)
Cleveland Guardians – 34-30 (7.5 GB)
Kansas City Royals – 34-32 (8.5 GB)
Chicago White Sox – 22-44 (20.5 GB)
As for standouts from the previous week, let’s start with the pitching performances of Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty against the Cubs:
Even though the offense had its rough patches throughout the week, Kerry Carpenter got the week started off with a three-homer game in the first game against the White Sox:
After an off day on Monday, the Tigers hit the road for three against an A.L. East foe before returning home this weekend for another interleague matchup:
- June 10-12th vs. Baltimore Orioles (Oriole Park at Camden Yards)
- June 13-15th vs. Cincinnati Reds (Comerica Park)
