College Hockey: Michigan earns third straight Frozen Four bid after knocking out rival MSU in Regional Final

The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans met for a sixth time on the ice during the 2023-24 season in a Regional Final showdown on Easter Sunday with a Frozen Four berth on the line.

The Wolverines upended the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in the Regional Semifinal, 4-3, while the Spartans rallied past the Western Michigan Broncos in overtime, 5-4, in their respective Regional Semifinals.

MSU came into the Regional Final 4-1 against Michigan this season that included beating the Wolverines in the “Duel in the D” battle for the “Iron D” Trophy in Detroit and capturing the Big Ten Tournament crown in overtime at home the weekend prior.

This time around, it would be the Wolverines who would get the final say in this season’s rivalry chapter using a four-goal third period to pull away to a 5-2 victory to land in the Frozen Four for a third straight season.

Michigan will take on the #1-ranked Boston College Eagles on Thursday, April 11th at 8:30 pm inside Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
