Lions hire Scottie Montgomery as new assistant head coach and running backs coach

The Detroit Lions have quickly found their replacement for the departing Duce Staley, who is leaving to join Frank Reich’s staff in Indianapolis.

The 44-year-old Montgomery comes to Detroit from the Indianapolis Colts, where he spent the last two seasons as the running backs coach.

The former wide receiver spent four seasons in the NFL with Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Oakland Raiders and has previous coaching stops in college and the NFL with Duke (2006-09 – wide receivers coach, 2013-15 – associate head coach & offensive coordinator); Pittsburgh Steelers (2010-12 – wide receivers coach); East Carolina (2016-18 – head coach); and Maryland (2019-20 – offensive coordinator).
