Michigan Hires Tracy Smith As New Baseball Head Coach

The University of Michigan has found its new replacement for the recently departed Erik Bakich.

Smith comes to Ann Arbor following seven seasons at Arizona State from 2015-21 and leading the Sun Devils to four NCAA Tournament appearances. During his tenure in Tempe, Smith got the chance to coach current Tiger and former #1 overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft Spencer Torkelson.

Prior to coaching at Arizona State, the Indiana native had head coaching stops at Miami (Ohio) (1997-2005), his alma mater, and Indiana (2006-14). Smith led the Hoosiers to the College World Series during the 2013 season.

Overall, Smith has compiled 805 career victories and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 25 seasons as a collegiate head coach.
