Heading Back Home: Ypsilanti’s Emoni Bates Transfers To Eastern Michigan

The Emoni Bates saga is over….for now.

After playing one season with Memphis, the one-time Michigan State verbal commit has (finally) made his transfer decision.

Bates played his junior year of high school basketball at Ypsilanti Prep Academy after two seasons with Lincoln High School. As a freshman in high school, Bates led Lincoln to its first Division 1 State Championship.

Bates skipped his senior season at the high school level and reclassified up to the 2021 class. In 18 games with the Memphis Tigers this past season, the former five-star recruit totaled 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest.

On June 29, 2020, Bates announced his commitment to play for Tom Izzo and the Spartans over Oregon and the NBA G League but then decommitted on April 30, 2021.
