The two Michigan-based schools that made this year’s NCAA Baseball Tournament gave it a good run in Regional play, but ultimately, fell short when it mattered the most.
After dropping their first Regional game to #13 Florida, 7-3, Central Michigan would avoid elimination against Liberty the following day, 3-2, and get the host Gators once again in another elimination contest. After trailing 5-0, the Chippewa rallied to even Sunday’s contest at 5-5, but the Gators would get the last laugh tallying the eventual winning run in the top of the 9th to win 6-5 and end CMU’s season at 43-19.
In Louisville, Michigan got off to fast start in the Regionals with 8-6 and 7-3 wins over Oregon and #12 Louisville, respectively, and were only one win away from advancing to the Super Regionals. Eventually, the Wolverines drew the host Cardinals again on Sunday and fell by a 20-1 decision to force a winner-take-all game yesterday afternoon. The Regional finale featured Michigan notching the first two runs followed by Louisville claiming the next seven to grab a 7-2 lead before a weather delay hit the area.
Following the delay, the Wolverines totaled the next seven of their own to jump ahead 9-7 going into the bottom of the 8th. From there, controversy occurred….
After the apparent missed call that would’ve ended the 8th inning, the Cardinals put up the last four runs to end Michigan’s season with a 34-28 mark.
If you’re keeping track at home, CMU went 1-2 in this year’s Regionals, while Michigan posted a 2-2 record.
