It’s Been Awhile Since Michigan And MSU Notched A New Year’s Six Bowl Win. Can They Break The Trend This Year?

2011 (Michigan) and 2014 (MSU).

That’s how long it’s been since the Wolverines and Spartans picked up a New Year’s Six Bowl victory.

In 2011, Michigan upended Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl courtesy of a game-winning field goal in overtime 23-20, while in 2014, Michigan State rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off Baylor in the Cotton Bowl, 42-41.

Since 2014, Michigan and MSU have gone a combined 0-3 in New Year’s Six Bowl contests (0-2 under Jim Harbaugh and 0-1 under Mark Dantonio).

However, Dantonio did lead the Spartans to a College Football Playoff berth in 2015 only to get steamrolled by Alabama in the semifinals at the Cotton Bowl, 38-0. Prior to this year, that was the last time MSU made a New Year’s Six Bowl game.

Harbaugh led the Wolverines to the Orange (2016) and Peach (2018) Bowls only to drop both contests against Florida State (33-32) and Florida (41-15), respectively.

The #10 Spartans take on the #12 Pittsburgh Panthers in the Peach Bowl on December 30th, while the #2 Wolverines battle the #3 Georgia Bulldogs in one College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl on December 31st.

Is this year both programs snap their long New Year’s Six Bowl droughts?
