Red Wings Draft Recap: Simon Edvinsson and Sebastian Cossa Headline Eight-Player Haul

In case you missed it, the 2021 NHL Entry Draft took place over the weekend as Detroit Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman decided to use his plethora of picks to make some moves and get the players he wanted, especially in the first round. With the 6th overall pick, Yzerman and his scouting staff dipped into the Swedish pool once again and took Defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The 6-foot-4 blueliner saw time in three different leagues last season and primarily played for Frolunda HC’s Under-20 Team contributing six points (1-5-6), a plus-four rating, and 10 penalty minutes in 14 games. You can read more about the pick here.

In addition, the Red Wings were slated to pick again in the first round at 23rd overall after acquiring the pick in the Anthony Mantha trade back in April, but Yzerman wasn’t going to sit on his hands and struck a deal with the Dallas Stars for the #15 pick in exchange for their 23rd, 48th, and 138th overall selections in this year’s draft. With the 15th selection, the Red Wings took the first goaltender off the board in Sebastian Cossa, who played last season with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, leading the league in both goals-against average (1.57) and save percentage (0.941), while tying for the league lead in shutouts (4) and ranking second in wins (17) among his 17-1-1 record. During Day Two of the NHL Draft, the Red Wings took six more players to get this year’s total up to eight players. You can read more about their second day haul here.
