Indy 500 postponed for first time since 1945

The Indianapolis 500 is the latest major sporting event to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a Thursday announcement, race officials said the May 24th race will instead be held three months later, on August 23rd. While expressing his disappointment over the delay, racing icon Roger Penske conceded pushing back the Indiana-based event was necessary. “We believe that postponing the event is the responsible decision with the conditions and restrictions we are facing,” he says.

The last time the Indy 500 wasn’t held over Memorial Day Weekend was 1945, when it was called off because of World War II.

Do you know of a major event that hasn’t been postponed? Do you think the pandemic will be over by August, or are race organizers being optimistic?
