Matt Patricia hires former player to be linebacker’s coach

The Detroit Lions have filled one of their coaching vacancies.

Surprise. Head coach Matt Patricia knows the guy personally. He’s hired Tyrone McKenzie to be the Lions’ next linebacker’s coach.

According to Kyle Meinke at MLive, these two have worked together before. Here’s more from Meinke:

“The most recent hire is McKenzie. He was a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2009, when Patricia was still the linebackers coach there, although never appeared in a game for New England. He began his coaching career as a special teams assistant for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, and has spent the past two seasons working under Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. Vrabel and Patricia have deep ties going back to New England, as do their general managers.”

McKenzie will be replacing Al Golden who was let go with eight other members of the staff after another disappointing season in 2019.
