J.D. Martinez has decided to stick with the Red Sox, declining the option to drop the remaining years on his contract and become a free agent.
Boston’s designated hitter was signed to a $110 million, five-year deal that also gave him an exit clause in the second or third years if he outperformed.
While remaining on the Sox is great for Martinez, the team now has to figure out how to keep the payroll low enough to have Mookie Betts for the long-term.
The 2018 AL MVP could command upwards of a $30-million yearly salary, notes the Associated Press.
What moves do you think the Sox need to make this year?
