Demario Davis’ religious proclamation earns him $7K fine

New Orleans linebacker Demario Davis has been slapped with a $7,000 fine for wearing a headband emblazoned with the words, “Man of God.”

Citing a rule that forbids players from wearing apparel that displays personal messages, NFL officials on Monday announced their decision to penalize the deeply religious player for the infraction, which occurred in a September game against Seattle.

Despite the hefty fine, Davis says he’s focusing on the good that might come out of the incident. “Of course, nobody wants to lose money,” he says. “But I think any time that the conversation about God is brought up, especially in these times, I think it’s always a positive or silver lining. If He can get glory from it, I think He can get glory from it whether I personally wear the headband or don’t wear the headband. We’re still all good.”

Can you think of other players who have violated this rule, even if they weren’t called out for it? Is the NFL a little too restrictive?
